Your Mac that used to be able to handle ten tasks simultaneously is now running at the speed of a sloth. It will continue to spin that multicolored wheel for hours every time you open a new task. If your Mac is less than 3 years old, it’s time to do something.
Most problems can be solved without the need for professional assistance. Mac’s operating system treats the entire hard drive as virtual memory. Mac uses less memory for its daily work if there are more files in your storage.
The first step to fixing the slow Mac performance problem would be to determine how much memory you have left and what’s taking up the most space. Go to the main Apple icon and select the first About This Mac option. Navigate to Storage from here. It can take over a minute to calculate the data. You will then see a graph showing which data categories are taking up the most space. Documents are the most popular, followed by apps, iCloud drive, mail, iOS files, photos, and a grey crisscrossed region called “Other Volumes” under Contained. This is the shady part that can consume 10 gigabytes virtual memory space. This vague category, “Other”, may take up more space than Apps or Photos. Find out more about “other” here.
Contrary to popular belief, “other files” are not dangerous. However, in most cases, they can be safely deleted from your computer. Everything macOS cannot categorize in documents, apps or photos is placed there.
How can we safely delete these files? Let’s follow the example of Apple and click on “Manage”.
– You can store files in iCloud from this location. Did we mention that it is affordable? Only optimized files of large files can be downloaded when you are ready. You can also access your data from any device as long as your Apple ID credentials are valid.
– Optimize storage: Here you can delete all episodes and movies that you have watched. This is a major reason why your “Other” storage is full and slowing down your computer. This option doesn’t force you to buy additional iCloud storage.
– Enable automatic trash removal so that files older than 30 day will be deleted automatically without your involvement.
– Reduce clutter: This is the most time-consuming step. The largest files on your computer will need to be manually checked. You may have files from your company, such as videos and presentations, stored on your computer via corporate Dropbox. Dropbox offers space-saving options such as Smart Sync, which allows you to indicate which folders should always be synchronized and which should only be accessible online.
Another feature is the ability to select which large file category to clean first. You can choose the file type you want to clear first by clicking on the Review Files option in the left-hand menu. Did we mention that your trash should be empty all the time?
Which brings up the question about the subject of this article: How did we accumulate so many files under the “Other” category? Downloading and trying out too many apps is one answer. Another reason would be to keep too many files in your company’s file storage. You could also be downloading too many files from the internet, not clearing cache, saving apps you don’t need anymore, and saving too many photo or video files.
By deleting “Other” data, you can not only save valuable memory space but also avoid spending extra money on iCloud storage.
